Release: Immediate

Women and Spirituality Group begins Nov. 4 at WRAC

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC) at the University of Iowa is sponsoring a new six-week discussion group for women. "Women and Spirituality" will explore how patriarchy has influenced women's spirituality.

"I came across several bits of information as I began exploring issues for women in Christianity," says Corinne Stanley, facilitator for the group. "For example, the snake was a sacred symbol of wisdom and regeneration and was connected with the image of woman in pre-Christian religions. Christianity teaches believers that snakes are evil. Why is the primary symbol of woman-ness evil in Christianity?"

The group will meet Tuesdays, beginning Nov. 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Old Brick, located at Clinton and Market streets in Iowa City. The group is free and open to the public, although a $10 donation over the six-week period is suggested. For more information or to register, call the Women's Resource and Action Center, (319) 335-1486.
