Public in invited to create table tops for Nov. 5 Tafelmusik concert

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, which will perform Nov. 5 in the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium, takes its name from the festive 18th-century music written to be played at feasts and banquets. Tafelmusik, means, literally, "table music."

In recognition of the Baroque tradition of feast music, Hancher invites businesses and members of the public to decorate tables for two that will be displayed in the Hancher lobby at the Nov. 5 concert. The table tops may be decorated according to each individual's imagination -- whimsically, elegantly, creatively or seasonally -- using tablecloths, glassware, silverware, dishes, centerpieces and other items.

Audience members will vote for their favorite table, and the winning table-top designer will be announced after the concert. The winner will receive two tickets to an upcoming Hancher event.

The 36-inch round tables will be set between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. the day of the concert. The Hancher Guild volunteer organization will assign a host to each table to greet viewers and to provide security for the table settings.

Participants must register in advance by calling Tim Meier at Hancher Auditorium, 319-335-1130. Only 28 reservations will be accepted, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participants are not required to attend the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra concert, but tickets for the event are available to table designers at the group discount price.

The Tafelmusik performance is part of the Cambridge Place Apartments Concert Series.
