U S WEST Foundation awards its largest Iowa arts grant to UI's Arts
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A $28,500 grant from the U S WEST Foundation to the
University of Iowa Foundation will fund a program to promote the arts in
schools and communities throughout Iowa. The grant is the largest awarded
in Iowa in the arts category by the U S WEST Foundation for 1997.
The "U S WEST Interact With Arts!" project will be coordinated
by Arts Share, a UI program comprised of faculty and graduate students
from the Schools of Art and Art History and Music, the dance and theater
departments, and the Writers' Workshop. Arts Share sponsors clinics, workshops,
lectures, demonstrations, performances, and other events for Iowa schools
and communities. The 1997-98 Arts Share program schedule will be mailed
this fall to schools and communities throughout Iowa.
The project consists of three components that focus on multicultural,
technological, and cross-disciplinary learning:
-- Artists from Arts Share will visit schools in Burlington, Maquoketa,
and Storm Lake, selected for their interest in and need for Arts Share
resources. Artists and teachers will work together to ensure that the
arts are integrated into the students' core curriculum. Educational materials
will be developed for the presentations.
-- Four UI ensembles are available for performances in communities
throughout the state. The groups are the Percussion Ensemble, the VocalEase
Jazz Ensemble, Black Action Theater, and Dancers in Company. The U S WEST
grant covers 50 percent of the ensembles' fees.
-- Arts Share and Hancher Auditorium will sponsor an Iowa Communications
Network (ICN) broadcast of Samite, a Ugandan musician who plays the flute,
percussion, and kalimba (thumb piano), in conjunction with his performance
at Hancher Auditorium in March 1998.
"We are grateful to the U S WEST Foundation for this generous grant
which benefits the entire state," said Diane Kenney Handler, Arts
Share coordinator. "It will allow us to extend our program to many
more Iowa communities."

The U S WEST Foundation is one of the largest corporate foundations
in the country, investing more than $25 million annually in education,
outreach to families and children, support for small businesses, and technology
training. Most grants are in communities where U S WEST Communications
provides telephone service.
The University of Iowa Foundation is the preferred channel of support
for private contributions to all areas of the University of Iowa. Foundation
staff work with alumni, friends, and corporations to provide resources
for special programs, technology, professorships, scholarships, building
renovations, equipment, and other forms of support for the UI.
