International environmental activist to speak at UI Oct. 15

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- International activist Medha Patkar will speak on "Redefining Development: Roles of People's Movements" Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 4:15 in Shambaugh Auditorium.

Patkar is India's leading social and environmental activist and also serves as the coordinator of the National Alliance of People's Movements, an umbrella organization for groups across India that oppose the current model for development in the country and work to promote alternatives to the modern global economy. Her work has been recognized with a number of national and international awards.

Patkar's presentation at the University of Iowa is co-sponsored by the South Asian Studies Program, the Women''s Resource and Action Center, and the Women's Studies Program.
