Women's Center to host 'Activist Celebration' Dec. 4 at Public Library

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC) at the University of Iowa will host an"Activist Celebration" Thursday, Dec. 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Iowa City Public Library in Meeting Room A.

The public is invited to the celebration which honors a new program initiated last April by the Women's Center, the"Social Change Training Program." Refreshments will be served.

The Social Change Training Program provides seminars that teach practical organizing and activist skills. Past seminars have focused on the principles of direct action organizing, effective meeting facilitation, the principles of feminist organizing, working effectively with the news media, and culturally competent organizing. "Our hope has been to inspire and help individuals engaged in community work," said Monique DiCarlo, Women's Center director. "The celebration will provide an opportunity for participants from the seminars and others to meet and talk about their social change work." Input regarding future focus topics for training seminars will be sought from the celebration guests, she added.
