UI Press publishes 1997 Iowa Short Fiction Award winning collection

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A collection of short stories by a Cleveland author who won the 1997 Iowa Short Fiction Award has been published by the University of Iowa Press.

"Thank You for Being Concerned and Sensitive," by Jim Henry, is a collection of 12 short stories praised for their quirky humor and for their often darkly sardonic view of modern life.

Author Ann Beattie, judge for the 1997 competition, compared Henry's work to noted American author Donald Barthelme.

"[Henry's] characters struggle with private dreams and demons and with public versus private realities," Beattie said. "I think 'Congressman Spoonbender' is a wonderful story, and -- as with so many of the stories -- it's difficult not to feel uneasily, and perhaps a bit exhilaratingly, implicated."

The Iowa Short Fiction Award is presented annually by the UI Press. The competition is also conducted by the UI Writers' Workshop.

Jim Henry was raised in suburban Chicago and Cleveland. He earned a bachelor's degree from the City College of New York and is currently finishing his master's in English at Cleveland State University. His stories have appeared in Whiskey Island and Studies in Contemporary Satire.

"Thank You for Being Concerned and Sensitive" is available at bookstores nationwide for $$24.95 clothbound. The book can also be ordered from UI Press by calling (319) 384-3808 (for calls within Johnson County) or 1-800-235-2665 (outside Johnson County).
