Former UI presidents play role in lecture at California university

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- An annual lecture at a California university on Nov. 20 will have a University of Iowa flavor -- one former UI president will give a lecture named in honor of another former UI president.

James O. Freedman, who was UI president from 1982 to 1987, will present the Howard R. Bowen Lecture on Nov. 20 at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, Calif. The lecture series, now in its 14th year, honors the late Bowen, who was UI president from 1964 to 1969. He later served as president at Claremont Graduate University.

Freedman has been president of Dartmouth College since 1987. His Bowen lecture is titled "College Presidents and the Public Stage." Freedman was in Iowa City this past February to participate in a UI sesquicentennial symposium.

The Howard R. Bowen Lecture is sponsored by the Hausam-Fisk Endowment and the Center for Education Studies at Claremont, which is dedicated exclusively to graduate studies.
