UI Libraries, Alumni Association sponsor program for mystery readers

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries and the UI Alumni Association present "The Poison Pen," a program in the Intrigue at Iowa Mystery Series on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids. Intrigue at Iowa is an ongoing survey of the mystery fiction genre coordinated by the University of Iowa Libraries. The program is free and open to the public.

"The Poison Pen" features Dr. Richard Caplan, a UI alumnus who recently retired from the faculty of the UI School of Medicine, and Lois Cox, a professor at the UI School of Law and an avid student of the mystery novel.

Caplan is the author of "Dr. Watson, Mr. Sherlock Holmes", which imitates the original Holmes stories and elaborates on the story of how the main characters of Arthur Doyle's Holmes novels meet. He is also the founder a local chapter of the Baker Street Irregulars (BSI), an international society of readers and scholars devoted to Sherlockian literature.

Cox recently attended Bouchercon, a worldwide conference dedicated to mystery writing and reading. Additionally, Cox belongs to a local group that explores the writings of women mystery authors.

The Elmcrest Country Club is located at 1000 36th St. Northeast. Directions are available from the Club's Main Office at (319) 366-8401. Following the program, there will be a reception with light refreshments. For further information or to make reservations, please contact the UI Alumni Association Offices at (319) 335-3294.
