Michael Blake/Hands Jewelers wins Hancher table-decorating contest

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Michael Blake's design for Hands Jewelers won the table-decorating contest sponsored by the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium in conjunction with the Nov. 5 concert of the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. Harlan Sifford of Iowa City received honorable mention.

More than 20 individual and business designers entered the competition.

The theme of Blake's gold-and-white decoration was "go for baroque," incorporating gold-painted fruits, leaves and drapery on a table-spanning arch. The place-settings were Lenox china and Waterford crystal.

Tafelmusik means, literally, "table music," reflecting that fact that much of the music the orchestra performs was composed for banquets and feasts. In recognition of the Baroque tradition of feast music, Hancher invited businesses and members of the public to decorate tables for two that were displayed in the Hancher lobby at the Nov. 5 concert.

Audience members voted for their favorite table, and the winning table-top designer was announced at the conclusion of the concert. As the winning designer, Blake received two tickets to an upcoming Hancher event.

The Tafelmusik performance was part of the Cambridge Place Apartments Concert Series.
