UI women engineers plan Nov. 6 visits to two Iowa City high schools

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Members of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) from the University of Iowa College of Engineering will visit two Iowa City high schools to promote interest in engineering career opportunities Thursday, Nov. 6.

The times of the visits, participating teachers and their schools are:

8:10 a.m.-1:20 p.m., Marty Cory and Nicole Scott, Iowa City High School, 1900 Morningside Drive; and

8:10-11:20 a.m., Jim Ruebush and Anne Flynn, West High School, 2901 Melrose Avenue.

The engineering students will direct an engineering construction and learning project called "The Great Marble Raceway." The project requires small groups of high school students to construct a track made of newspaper that is capable of guiding marbles along a pathway for six seconds. The project, held annually by SWE, is designed to give students a view of the engineering profession by acquainting them with such concepts as design, resource management, teamwork, and problem solving, according to Julie Fuhrman, SWE outreach director.
