UI Libraries appoints head of Information, Research and Instructional Services

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Carol Hughes has been appointed head of Information, Research and Instructional Management (IRIS) at the University of Iowa.

In Hughes' new position, she will supervise the IRIS management team providing leadership for Information and Research Services (Reference), the Information Arcade and the Media Services Department. The appointment begins June 2.

Prior to her appointment at the UI, Hughes was a member services officer for the Research Libraries Group (RLG), a library organization headquartered in California, where she was responsible for planning and implementation of cooperative projects in support of local, national and international access to information. She held primary responsibility for SHARES, the RLG resource sharing program.

Hughes also held the position of assistant to the director at the University of Michigan Libraries where she worked on a variety of programs and projects related to critical issues facing large research libraries. She also worked for the RLG project Preferred Futures for Libraries, publishing two documents with Richard Dougherty, former dean of Library Services at the University of Michigan.

Hughes taught library science at the University of Michigan and business administration courses at the University of Wyoming. Her other professional library positions include director of the University Center at Tulsa Library; head of Technical Services for Cities Service Oil and Gas Library; coordinator of the Tulsa Area Library Cooperative; and cataloger at the University of Wyoming Libraries.

With an extensive publication record on scholarly communication, library cooperation, and copyright journals, Hughes holds a doctorate in library and information science from the University of Michigan, an M.B.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles, and an M.L.S. and bachelor's in Latin from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.
