NEW DANCE COMPANY PERFORMS AT UI JUNE 6 and 7 -- Highly Trained Pedestrians, a new eight-member dance company directed by recent University of Iowa dance graduate Rani Welch, will perform "Spectacle" at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 6-7, in the Space/Place of UI North Hall.

"Spectacle" is seven works choreographed by Welch and produced under the artistic direction of Bret Gothe, a UI intermedia art alumnus.

Some of the works address issues of concern to high-risk junior high and high school students. Residents of Youth Homes, a local non-profit human services agency, will view the production and attend workshops offered by Welch and her dancers.

Welch has been featured as a choreographer and dancer in numerous UI dance concerts. She has also choreographed for the Iowa Arts Festival and Riverfest, and she has presented workshops for Arts Share, the UI arts outreach program. Her work has also been seen at Jacob's Pillow, the Performance Choreography Conference of Regional Dance America, and the Biennial International Dance Festival in Lyon, France.

Gothe's local design credits include "Irving Weber's Iowa City," "The Black Monk," "TeKNOWLEDGEy," "Floresta" and thesis concerts by several dance department students.

The performance, co-sponsored by the UI dance department, is supported by a grant from the Iowa Arts Council.

Admission to the concert will be $5 ($4 for UI students) at the door.
