UI Professor Bruce Gronbeck to receive honorary doctorate in Sweden

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Bruce Gronbeck, A. Craig Baird Distinguished Professor of Public Address in the department of communication studies at the University of Iowa, will receive an honorary degree during spring commencement ceremonies Friday,

May 30, at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden.

Gronbeck was nominated to receive the doctorate of philosophy (honoris causa) by the Uppsala University faculty of arts. During the ceremony the degree will be presented by the university's rector, and Gronbeck will be hailed with a 21-gun salute.

Uppsala University claims the distinction of being the oldest university in Europe. Gronbeck has taught rhetorical studies at the Swedish university in a visiting capacity and was a Fulbright lecturer there in 1992. He joined the UI faculty in 1979.

Gronbeck also holds an honorary doctor of human letters from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., where he earned a bachelor's degree summa cum laude in 1963. He received a master's degree in speech and dramatic arts in 1966 and a doctorate in speech in 1970, both from the UI.
