Study to determine effectiveness of cholesterol-lowering drug

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- People with controlled non-insulin dependent diabetes are invited to participate in a research study at the University of Iowa College of Medicine.

The four-year study will determine the effectiveness of a new cholesterol-lowering drug, atorvastatin, in preventing or reducing the recurrence of coronary heart disease in people with non-insulin dependent diabetes. To qualify, people must be age 75 or younger, and women of child-bearing age must agree not to become pregnant during the study.

Qualified participants will receive a complete annual physical exam free of charge, including an annual electrocardiogram, blood and laboratory evaluations, and nutrition, exercise and weight-control counseling. Cholesterol-lowering medication may also be available to participants as part of the study.
