Study to determine effectiveness of cholesterol-lowering drug
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- People with controlled non-insulin dependent diabetes
are invited to participate in a research study at the University of Iowa
College of Medicine.
The four-year study will determine the effectiveness of a new cholesterol-lowering
drug, atorvastatin, in preventing or reducing the recurrence of coronary
heart disease in people with non-insulin dependent diabetes. To qualify,
people must be age 75 or younger, and women of child-bearing age must agree
not to become pregnant during the study.
Qualified participants will receive a complete annual physical exam
free of charge, including an annual electrocardiogram, blood and laboratory
evaluations, and nutrition, exercise and weight-control counseling. Cholesterol-lowering
medication may also be available to participants as part of the study.
