University of Iowa MBA program ranked by Business Week

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa College of Business Administration's MBA program was named to the list of the country's best programs by the Fifth Edition of Business Week's Guide to the Best Business Schools. The UI's program is included in the runners-up section that alphabetically lists the schools that placed 26 through 50. The top 25 schools are ranked numerically.

The rankings are based on surveys of graduates and corporate recruiters. In addition, hundreds of students, alumni, recruiters, faculty members and deans were interviewed to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each school. Business Week calls its biennial ranking of schools a "customer satisfaction report." In effect, the survey measures how well the schools are serving their two customers -- the students and their ultimate employers.

The guide profiles the runners-up schools as a group that provide the same quality of education as more prestigious schools and in some cases, may even exceed the top programs in niche areas. The biggest difference is the breadth and number of quality programs.

In contrast to the U.S. News and World Report rankings, Business Week does not include statistics on admissions and placement data; nor does it include average GMAT scores and starting salaries of MBAs provided to the magazine by the schools.

Business Week calls the UI's Business School a "well-kept secret except to those who read scholarly journals." The guide continues by saying that the word is slowly slipping out about the school's solid reputation and praises the school for making tremendous strides in integrating subject matter across classes.

The guidebook is an outgrowth of Business Week's rankings--begun in 1988--of the best business schools.
