Exhibition of MFA graduates' works will be at UI Museum of Art

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- "MFA 1996-97," an exhibition of works by recent recipients of the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History, will be on display May 9-June 7 at the UI Museum of Art.

A reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibition and honoring the student artists will be held 3:30-5 p.m. Friday, May 9, in the museum's sculpture court. Both the reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

The exhibition of MFA students' work is an annual event at the UI Museum of Art. The exhibition consists of thesis works by students who have completed the MFA degree in one of the studio areas of the School of Art and Art History during the previous year.

This year, work by 29 students will be included in the exhibition. Pieces from many of the studio areas will be shown, including ceramics, design, metalworking, inter-media, drawing, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

Dorothy Johnson, director of the UI School of Art and Art History, commented on this year's MFA exhibition: "This year's show reveals the breadth and innovation made possible by an education in art theory and practice. It is particularly exciting to see the realization of artistic education and the development of individual concepts and ideas in the works shown by the graduates who stand at a significant threshold in their professional careers."

The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots across from the museum on Riverside Drive, and adjacent to the UI Alumni Center, which is just north of the museum.
