Camerata Singers wrap up 1996-97 season at UI School of Music

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Camerata Singers will present the final major-ensemble performance at the University of Iowa School of Music for the 1996-97 academic year, when they perform a program featuring 20th-century choral music at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 11, in Clapp Recital Hall on the UI campus.

The concert, under the direction of Richard Bloesch, will be free and open to the public.

The program, which focuses on unfamiliar repertoire, is typical for Camerata. Made up of both UI students and community members, the ensemble characteristically programs "great works by little-known composers and little-known works by great composers," as Bloesch likes to explain.

The 20th-century works on the May 11 concert will be "Super Omnia" (Over all) by Dutch composer Albert de Klerk, featuring alto soloist Marcia Roberts; a setting of Psalm 150 by Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera; and three Latin motets by Danish composer Niels la Cour.

The concluding work will be the Three Sacred Songs for soloist, chorus and organ by the 19th-century composer Felix Mendelssohn, performed with soprano soloist Marie Von Behren. Organist Paul Tegels will be featured in the Mendelssohn and de Klerk works.

De Klerk is known primarily as a composer of organ music. "Super Omnia" is based on a text taken from "The Imitation of Christ" by the 14th century Dutch mystical writer Thomas a Kempis.

Ginastera wrote his setting of Psalm 150 for chorus and large orchestra, but the composer later arranged it for chorus with two pianos. It is the latter version that will be performed by Camerata, with pianists Shawn Kirchner and Matthew Faerber, both students in the UI School of Music.

Bloesch received his doctorate in choral conducting and choral literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. He teaches the history of choral literature in the UI School of Music, conducts the Camerata Singers and advises doctoral students. He is CD review editor for the Choral Journal, and he held the national chair of the Repertoire and Standards Committee for Colleges and Universities in the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). He has recently completed an annotated bibliography of 20th-century choral music, which is to be published by the ACDA.
