University utility project will affect traffic on Newton Road near Westlawn

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa project to extend chilled water from the Nursing Building to Westlawn will reduce Newton Road to one lane of traffic in that area beginning in mid-May, after commencement, and continuing through late July. The project will affect vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.

Traffic control will be provided by a flag person. Signs will be erected to identify access for persons with disabilities.

The extension of the UI's chilled water system to Westlawn will allow for upgrading of air conditioning for that building in advance of a renovation project that will accommodate the eventual relocation of Student Health Services and a number of College of Medicine offices, including the Orthopaedic Surgery Rehabilitation Program, the Physician Assistant Program, Med Graphics and Med Photo. Westlawn also houses the UI Counseling Service, the Greentree Child Care Center, and the Lipid Research Clinic.

Two 8-inch chilled water lines will be installed below grade from the northwest corner of the Nursing Building to the center wing of Westlawn. In addition, an 8-inch domestic water line will be extended from the east side of the Steindler Building across Newton Road to Westlawn's center wing.
