University utility project will affect traffic on Newton Road near
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa project to extend chilled water
from the Nursing Building to Westlawn will reduce Newton Road to one lane
of traffic in that area beginning in mid-May, after commencement, and continuing
through late July. The project will affect vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian
Traffic control will be provided by a flag person. Signs will be erected
to identify access for persons with disabilities.
The extension of the UI's chilled water system to Westlawn will allow
for upgrading of air conditioning for that building in advance of a renovation
project that will accommodate the eventual relocation of Student Health
Services and a number of College of Medicine offices, including the Orthopaedic
Surgery Rehabilitation Program, the Physician Assistant Program, Med Graphics
and Med Photo. Westlawn also houses the UI Counseling Service, the Greentree
Child Care Center, and the Lipid Research Clinic.
Two 8-inch chilled water lines will be installed below grade from the
northwest corner of the Nursing Building to the center wing of Westlawn.
In addition, an 8-inch domestic water line will be extended from the east
side of the Steindler Building across Newton Road to Westlawn's center
