Panel to discuss how welfare changes are affecting women
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- "Welfare cutbacks: Affecting the present and
future of women in Iowa" is the topic of a panel discussion Monday,
March 31, at 7:30 p.m in the Miller Room of the Iowa Memorial Union at
the University of Iowa. The program is free and open to the public and
is sponsored by the Women's Resource and Action Center.
Panel members are Jan Losby of the Institute for Economic and Social
Development, an agency that has been tracking changes in welfare around
Iowa; Jill French, welfare recipient, single mother and graduate student
who is examining the detrimental effects of the media's portrayal of welfare
recipients; Lois Cox, UI professor of law; and John Sopher, income maintenance
supervisors with the Department of Human Services.
The event is being co-sponsored by the UI School of Social Work.
