New endowment named at University of Iowa Libraries

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Arthur Benton, professor emeritus in neurology in the UI College of Medicine, has created two endowments to support visiting lecturers and professional development at the UI Libraries.

The Arthur Benton Excellence in Reference Services Professional Development Award will be given biennially to a professional staff member at the UI Libraries who has demonstrated outstanding commitment in providing reference service. The award will support the recipient's professional development activities related to the advancement of reference services that include conferences, workshops or research projects and publications.

The Ada M. Stoflet Lectureship was created in memory of Ada M. Stoflet, a dedicated member of the UI Libraries staff for three decades and head of the Main Library Research Department. The lecture will take place every other year and focus on a topic of interest to the staff of the Libraries.

A longtime supporter of the UI Libraries, Benton was a professor in the Department of Neurology. He is an internationally renowned neuropsychologist whose career has spanned more than 60 years. He was given the Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology by the American Psychological Foundation in 1992.

His wife, the late Rita Benton, was a musicologist and served as the music librarian at the UI Libraries from 1957 to 1980. The Rita Benton Music Library honors her memory.
