Jewish family recipes fill the menu of Bubby's Deli at Iowa Summer Rep

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Family recipes of Iowa Memorial Union Chef Barry Greenberg have transformed the University of Iowa Theatre Building's Patio Bar and Grill into Bubby's Deli for the Iowa Summer Rep festival of plays by Neil Simon June 25-July 26.

Dinner will be served at Bubby's Deli from 6:30 p.m. to curtain time in conjunction with evening Iowa Summer Rep performances.

Food service by the IMU has been a regular feature of Iowa Summer Rep for many seasons, and the fare has often adopted a theme related to the season's plays. The New York Jewish milieu of Simon's comedies inspired Greenberg to share some of the favorite dishes prepared by his mother and grandmother.

"Bubby" is a transliteration of "Babi," the traditional term of endearment by which Greenberg knew his grandmother, and by which his children know his mother.

The menu items -- including corned beef sandwiches, pastrami sandwiches, and smoked salmon and bagels -- will be made with authentic New York deli meats. Other family favorites on the menu include potato knish, chopped chicken livers with challah and onion relish, and braised rolled cabbage.

The dessert menu is topped by, of course, New York cheesecake.

The staff will dispense with the usual Patio Bar and Grill dress to serve diners in the traditional New York deli uniform of white shirts, white pants and white paper hats. Each table will feature kosher pickles and a variety of mustards.

Diners may order a full dinner for $11.25 or may select individual courses a la carte.

Reservations for Bubby's Deli are not required, but reservations are recommended for weekend shows. Reservations may be made by calling 319-335-3105.

Tickets and series subscriptions for Iowa Summer Rep productions -- Simon's "Broadway Bound," "Laughter on the 23rd Floor" and "God's Favorite" -- are available in advance from the Hancher Auditorium box office, (319) 335-1160.
