Local student receives UI Opportunity at Iowa Scholarship

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- (Name) of (hometown) is one of 51 high school seniors nationwide to receive the University of Iowa Opportunity at Iowa Scholarship. (Name) is a graduate of (high school).

The scholarship is one of the UI's highest awards for entering freshmen. Recipients were chosen from a field of more than 100 top-ranking minority high school seniors. Winners were selected on the basis of their high school rank, college entrance exam scores, and their interest in attending the UI.

The scholarship includes an award of $5,000 per year towards tuition and room and board expenses, which is renewable for up to four years or the completion of a bachelor's degree, whichever comes first, provided the student maintains a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

The students also are given the opportunity to accept an Undergraduate Scholar Assistantship (USA) of $2,000 annually. The USA program pairs the UI's best undergraduate students with faculty scholars to work an average of 10 hours a week on a research or teaching project.
