Director of technology at the UI Libraries elected to national board

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Lawrence Woods, director of information systems and technology at the University of Iowa Libraries, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA).

A division of the American Library Association, LITA's mission is to provide a forum for discussion, learning, design, development and implementation of automated and technological systems in the library and information science field.

Woods has been on staff at the UI Libraries since 1991. He supervised the development of the Information Arcade, an award-winning electronic information and multimedia teaching facility, and the strategic planning process for the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences.

Active on several LITA committees, Woods served as a representative to the committee responsible for maintaining machine readable cataloging standards from 1993-97. He also served on the nominating committee from 1995-96, chaired the character set committee and has been active in state and regional professional associations.

In 1985 Woods received the American Society for Information Science's Watson Davis Award for outstanding continuous contributions to the organization. He is the author of several publications on information technology, including the "Librarians guide to Microcomputer Technology and Application."

Before his position at the UI, Woods was vice-president of RMG Consultants and was associate research librarian at the University of Notre Dame Libraries. He received a bachelor's from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Ill. and a master of library science from Simmons College in Boston, Mass.
