Former UI administrator M.L. Huit dies at 86

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- M.L. Huit, 86, who gave 32 years of service administering student life at the University of Iowa, died Sunday, July 20 at University Hospitals. The body has been donated to the University of Iowa.

Huit, of 626 Brookland Park Dr., came to the UI in 1946 as a counselor to male students. He became dean of students in 1956 and took on the role of ombudsman in 1973. From 1933-35 he taught in the Peking American School in Beijing, China.

A native of Delta, Ohio, Huit's career at the UI was characterized by an ability to empathize with students. He received a bachelor's degree in history and political science in 1933 from Ohio Wesleyan University and a master's degree in psychology in 1949 from the UI.

Survivors include his wife, Jane, and three daughters and five grandchildren.

Huit was president of the University's Triangle from 1959-60 and served on the executive committee of the National Student Personnel Administrators. He was a member of the Iowa State Historical Society, on the board of the Johnson County Historical Society, a member of the Wesley Foundation Board, the board of fellows of the University School of Religion and the American College Personnel Association. He was an active member of Rotary International and in 1995 received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Service from the UI.

Memorial contributions may be made to the UI Foundation for the School of Music, the Omicron Delta Kappa Chapter at the UI or the United Methodist Church for the Wesley Foundation.
