UI School of Music has hired University Symphony conductor for 1997-98

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa has appointed William L. Jones, a UI music alumnus and the founding music director/administrator of the internationally recognized Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn., to be director of the University Symphony for the 1997-98 academic year.

Jones will replace James Dixon, who retires at the end of the current year after more than 40 years as the orchestra's director. Dixon succeeded Philip G. Clapp, the founding director of the orchestra, in 1954.

David Nelson, director of the UI School of Music, commented: "We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Bill Jones' experience, leadership and commitment to direct the University Symphony next year. The orchestra is a central part of the educational experience that the School of Music provides to its students, and I know that Jones will continue the wonderful tradition that Philip G. Clapp and Jim Dixon have created, that our orchestra concerts are a source of inspiration for players and audience members alike."

Jones said, "I look forward with great enthusiasm to returning to the University of Iowa and the School of Music. It is an honor to be invited to be a part of the distinguished music faculty, and I am very aware of the wonderful tradition that has been established there through the orchestral program and the School of Music itself.

"I am especially happy to be in a position to share some of my love and enthusiasm for music with the students."

Jones has appeared as a guest conductor with the Minnesota Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Sinfonie Orchester AML-Luzern (Switzerland) and other orchestras around the world. He has conducted all-state and festival orchestras in 46 states and five Canadian provinces. He has been conductor-in-residence at the North Carolina School of the Arts and the University of Miami (Fla.).

Among other honors, he has received the Twin Cities Mayors' Public Art Award, the American String Teachers Association Exceptional Leadership and Merit Award and the David W. Preuss Leadership Award, and he was Sigma Alpha Iota Musician of the Year.

Jones was initiator and project director for the establishment of the Minnesota School for the Arts. He has been Chairman of the Board of the Minnesota Alliance for Arts in Education. He holds and Master of Fine Arts in music from the UI and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
