UI's Coulter named to association's distinguished membership
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Dr. Joe D. Coulter, has been named to Distinguished Service
Membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
The special designation recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions
to academic medicine and to the AAMC.
Coulter is professor of anatomy in the University of Iowa College of Medicine,
interim associate provost and acting head of Opportunity of Iowa. Since 1985,
Coulter has represented the Society for Neuroscience on the AAMC Council of
Academic Societies, serving as chair of the council in 1989. He serves on
and has chaired the council's Committee on Research Integrity. Over the years,
Coulter has also given congressional testimony on behalf of the National Institutes
of Health budget and on behalf of the AAMC.
The AAMC is a nonprofit association dedicated to improving the nation's health
through the advancement of academic medicine. It includes 125 accredited U.S.
medical schools; the 16 accredited Canadian medical schools; more than 400
major teaching hospitals and health systems, including 70 Department of Veterans
Affairs medical centers; nearly 90 academic and professional societies representing
75,000 faculty members; and the nation's medical students and residents.
