Bill T. Jones/Bill Moyers special shot at UI airs on IPTV Jan. 15

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- "Bill T. Jones: 'Still/Here' with Bill Moyers," a TV special featuring extensive video footage shot at the University of Iowa, will be broadcast at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, on IPTV. The special will be followed by a made-for-TV version of "Still/Here" at 11 p.m.

"Still/Here," a dance/theater production about the emotional and spiritual challenge of vanquishing the fear of death and celebrating the fact of life, was co-commissioned by the UI Hancher Auditorium, where the American premiere was given in September 1994 by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company.

Jones was also in Iowa the previous winter to conduct one of a series of "survival workshops," which yielded audio, video and photographs that were incorporated into the production. Several Iowans coping with life-threatening illnesses participated in the workshop at the UI Hospitals and Clinics, and their images and words were prominently featured in the production. Jones used their insights as his creative inspiration, their words became lyrics for the production's music and their spontaneous movements became the raw material of Jones' choreography.

The workshops at the UI and elsewhere were documented for Moyers by filmmaker David Grubin, and footage of Iowa interviews, rehearsals and performances was also taken. Moyers calls the resulting special "a program about learning the skills of life in the face of adversity."

Jones, a MacArthur "genius grant" winner who Newsweek magazine called "one of the most important artists at work in dance today," has a long history of work in Iowa. In addition to residencies and commissions at the UI, he has been in residence with the Cedar Arts Forum in Waterloo/Cedar Falls. Iowa City native Janet Lilly was a member of his company and Valerie Williams of Ames has been the company's rehearsal director.
The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company will return to the UI to perform two different programs, March 14 and 15 in Hancher.

"Still/Here" was commissioned by Hancher Auditorium, Northrop Auditorium at the University of Minnesota, the Walker Art Center, On the Boards in Seattle and the University of Washington World Dance Series with support from the Northwest Area Foundation, joining an international network of commissioners. The UI survival workshops were made possible through the involvement of the UI Hospitals and Clinics and ICARE.
