UI WISE program hosts Women in Research Day Feb. 20

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program will host its third annual Women in Research Day for UI faculty, staff and students from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20 in Room 283, Eckstein Medical Research Building on the UI campus.

The day's activities will include a poster session and workshops on collaborative research, mentoring, and resume and curriculum vitae writing. Presenters will include Elizabeth Swanson, associate vice president for health professions education;

Henrietta Logan, professor of preventive and community dentistry; and Derek Willard, associate vice president for research.

Participants will also be invited to attend a reception at the Iowa City Area Science Center from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 22 in Old Capitol Center. They will receive free passes to the Iowa City Area Science Center's "Snakes Alive" exhibit, compliments of Hills Bank. Refreshments will be provided by Hy-Vee and Econofoods.

The reception will follow a free training session for people interested in informal science education. The session, which will run from 1 to 5 p.m. in Room W410, Pappajohn Business Administration Building on the UI campus, is offered by the WISE Program and the Iowa State University Program for Women in Science and Engineering and funded by the National Science Foundation.

The WISE program is designed to encourage women to participate in science-related disciplines within the university, the state, and the nation, and to promote their educational and career development.
