The University of Iowa will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding
on Tuesday, Feb. 25, with a special Founders Day Birthday Bash at Old Capitol.
UI President Mary Sue Coleman will be joined by Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad
and former Gov. Robert D. Ray for a short program during which Gov. Branstad
will sign a commemorative resolution.
In addition, a number of Iowa legislators will be on hand to re-enact the
legislative session creating the university. Of course, Old Capitol was Iowa's
first state capitol and is the building where the legislation creating the
UI was enacted.
Here is a tentative schedule of events for the day:
4 p.m. President Coleman and UI vice presidents will blow out the candles
on a special birthday cake and then cut pieces for the public.
4 to 5:45 p.m. 1847 General Assembly re-enactment, House Chamber
5:50 p.m. Program, Senate Chamber, with welcome and introduction of special
guests by President Coleman
5:58 p.m. Remarks by former Gov. Robert Ray
6:02 p.m. Remarks by Gov. Terry E. Branstad and signing of commemorative
6:15 p.m. Program adjourns
