UI nursing professor's book to be distributed in Latin America, Spain

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A book written by a faculty member in the University of Iowa College of Nursing has been slated for distribution throughout Latin America and Spain, which is unusual for a nursing text.

Diane L. Huber, a UI associate professor of nursing, had her book "Leadership and Nursing Care Management," published in the U.S. in 1996. The book was originally published by the W.B. Saunders Company, but its world rights for translation and distribution were purchased by McGraw Hill Inter-Americana Editores SA.

"It's fairly unusual, especially for a nursing text," Huber says of the distribution. "I'm guessing it will fill a niche for them."

Huber says publication will most likely take place in a year and a half, after translation of the book into Spanish is complete. This is the first book Huber has had translated into a foreign language.

Huber wrote the book as a text for undergraduates. However, since its publication the book has been used in both undergraduate and graduate classrooms, she says. The book "meshes the ideas of leadership and care management and attempts to blend them into the roles of the nurse," Huber says.

Mixing leadership and care management is extremely important in light of current health care changes, Huber says, and will continue to be important. Huber says she wrote the book because there had not been a good text published about the subject.

In addition to her duties in the College of Nursing, Huber serves as adjunct director of nursing at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
