Feb. 19 IPTV documentary previews new Ying Quartet residency at UI

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- IPTV will re-broadcast "The Ying Quartet: An Iowa Experience," a documentary about the Ying Quartet's two-year residency in Jesup, Iowa, at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19. The broadcast comes just a few days before the string quartet begins a new, two-week residency at the University of Iowa.

The Ying Quartet will be in residence at the UI Feb. 24-March 7, culminating with a concert at 8 p.m. Friday, March 7, in Clapp Recital Hall, part of Hancher Auditorium's 1996-97 Gazette Chamber Music Series.

The Ying Quartet residency will include numerous performances at the UI Hospitals and Clinics through the Project Art program, as well as master classes and mini-concerts at Iowa City High School, Cornell College, Ronald McDonald House and the UI School of Music.

The Ying Quartet, winner of the 1993 Naumburg Chamber Music Award, is a classical ensemble of siblings from Winnetka, Ill. They were in residence at Jesup through the National Endowment for the Arts Rural Residency Program.

The IPTV documentary explores their impact on the rural community, and the impact of the experience on the musicians. The program includes a performance of Dvorak's "American" Quartet, which was composed not far from Jesup, in Spillville, Iowa.

The Gazette is the corporate sponsor of Hancher's Chamber Music Series, through the University of Iowa Foundation. The Ying residency is also supported by Chamber Music America and the Iowa Arts Council.
