ICN links Iowa students to Canadian Brass masterclass at UI's Hancher

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- More than 50 schools throughout Iowa linked to a Dec. 9 Canadian Brass masterclass in the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium through the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). At the UI for Dec. 9 and 10 Hancher concerts, the world-famous brass quintet used the hour-and-a-half session to critique student ensembles, perform and answer questions, both from the live audience in Hancher and through the ICN from students in classrooms near and far.

The ICN session with the Canadian Brass was presented by Hancher with support from IES Industries. Additional support for the masterclass came from the UI School of Music, Yamaha Corporation of America, West Music Company and the UI Arts Share program. Hancher's ICN equipment was purchased with funds donated by USWest, through the University of Iowa Foundation.

In nearly 30 years of performing and recording, the Canadian Brass

-- Charles Daellenbach, tuba; Jens Lindemann, trumpet; David Ohanian, French horn; Ronald Romm, trumpet; and Eugene Watts, trombone -- has defined the contemporary brass quintet, while carving out its own unique niche in entertainment.

The Canadian Brass was one of the earliest and most successful "crossover" ensembles, combining the highest standards in the performance of the classical repertoire with arrangements of popular music from Dixieland to rock hits. Their concert attire -- tuxes and tennis shores -- exemplified not only their eclectic repertoire, but also the attitude of casual fun that they bring to their concerts. The New York Times once dubbed them "the Marx Brothers of brass," and their many recordings have been world-wide best-sellers.

The Canadian Brass concerts were part of Hancher's 1997-98 Family Series, sponsored by Country Bancorporation and Kay J.A. Bernau through the University of Iowa Foundation.

The ICN is a statewide, publicly owned, interactive fiber-optic system that was created by the Iowa Legislature to provide citizens of the state with access to educational, medical and governmental resources. More than 500 sites throughout the state are now equipped to access the system.

Hancher Auditorium has explored the possibilities of this technology for a little more than a year, in progressively more adventurous sessions featuring jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater; trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis, in conjunction with a performance of his Pulitzer Prize-winning "Blood on the Fields" with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra; Bobby McFerrin, who was at the UI to conduct the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra; the Children's Theatre Company; and the Colorado Quartet. The Canadian Brass event was the largest event so far, in terms of the number of schools participating.

For information about Hancher's future ICN events, contact Hancher's education coordinator, Michelle Coleman, at (319) 335-0009.

Arts Share is a UI program that provides artistic expertise from the Iowa Center for the Arts to schools, local arts councils, community arts associations, museums, senior citizen centers and other organizations throughout Iowa and the surrounding region. The Arts Share roster of touring artists includes nearly 100 faculty members, ensembles and graduate students in the performing, visual and literary arts.

For more information about Arts Share events contact program director Diane Kenney Handler at (319) 335-1618.
