Antczak appointed associate dean of academic programs

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Fred Antczak, a University of Iowa professor of rhetoric, will succeed James Lindberg as associate dean of academic programs starting in mid-May 1998.

Antczak is currently the chair of the rhetoric department and has served on many college committees over the years including the Educational Policy Committee and the Executive Committee. He also has received teaching awards from the UI and from the University of Virginia and helped to organize a conference on "Learning at Iowa: Transcending the Trade-offs Between Teaching and Research."

Antczak has been involved for many years in issues of faculty development, educational policy, advising, admissions, student issues, and curriculum development -- including working on the committee that initiated the new First Year Seminars.

"We were fortunate in having an excellent slate of candidates from which to identify a new associate dean," said Linda Maxson, dean of the College of Liberal Arts. "The appointment of a DEO from a department whose work is so GER-heavy is a way of reinforcing how seriously the College takes the GERs. Quality general education classes are the foundation of a good education, both for students in Liberal Arts and for students in the other colleges who are required to take some of our courses."

The associate dean for academic programs oversees the General Education Program (GER), undergraduate curriculum and program development, all aspects of educational policy, and student academic policy including academic standards and honesty.

Antczak will work together with Lindberg to ensure a smooth transition in leadership. Lindberg will return to the faculty in July.
