Women's Center starts clothing drive for domestic violence project
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Get an early start on your annual New Year's resolution
to organize your home or your life by cleaning out your closets now. Volunteers
at the Women's Resource & Action Center (WRAC) at the University of Iowa
will be collecting clothing for women and children staying at the Domestic
Violence Intervention Project (DVIP) shelter now through Dec. 19.
Donations may be dropped off at the Women's Center, 130 N. Madison, from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
For college students heading home, volunteers also will be collecting clothing
donations from Jan. 19-25, 1998.
The Domestic Violence Intervention Program provides direct services and support
to victims of domestic violence, including a 24-hour crisis line, advocacy,
counseling and safe shelter. The shelter provides help to 500-600 women and
children each year. "The shelter currently needs clothing for women and
children, especially children's snowsuits and boy's clothing," said Ann
Heitman, WRAC volunteer. "As we enter the winter months, it is particularly
important that the DVIP shelter have appropriate clothing for residents who
may find themselves unexpectedly separated from their own belongings."
