WRAC offers facilitator training beginning Sept. 15

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa (WRAC) is offering a fall training program for women interested in facilitating support groups. The training sessions will be Sept. 15, 17, 19, 20, and 22.

The 15 hours of training will introduce the participants to WRAC resources, explore group dynamics, train the participants in conflict resolution, and prepare women to start their own group.

"This is an excellent opportunity for women who see a need in the community that a support group can help, but don't have the all the knowledge or resources to begin the group themselves," says WRAC Director Monique DiCarlo. "Or, it is an excellent opportunity for women who are interested in a topic and want to explore the issues of the topic with other women in the community."

Because of the positive response of community women to past facilitator trainings, WRAC has been able to offer women a minimum of five - and an average of 10 - support groups at any time. Past groups have included Women and Sports, Eating Disorders Support Group, Women of Color, Single Moms, Coming Out, and Tarot Card Discussion Group.

"The fall training is a chance for women to learn techniques to facilitate groups of all kinds - support, discussion, and educational," says Courtney Reed Jenkins, WRAC support group coordinator. "The training also encourages women to put those skills in to action. We help each other develop outlines for the groups and a publicity plan to advertise the groups."

WRAC also serves as a sponsor for the groups that come out of the training. After the participants complete the training, WRAC publicizes the group, provides space for the event, tries to find volunteer childcare for groups, and offers continuing advice and resources to facilitators, says Jenkins.

For more information about the training or to register, contact the WRAC at 130 N. Madison St., Iowa City, IA, 52242, phone (319) 335-1486.
