Hancher Auditorium 1997-98 grant support totals more than $100,000
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Performing arts programming at the University of Iowa
Hancher Auditorium has attracted grant support of more than $100,00 for the
1997-98 season, which begins in September.
October performances of "Strega Nona" by the Children's Theatre
Company will be supported by a $2,788 grant from Arts Midwest, which combines
funds from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) with contributions from
private and corporate sources in the Midwest.
January performances and residency activities of the Dayton Contemporary
Dance Company, which focuses on African-American dance traditions, have drawn
support of $9,000 from Arts Midwest and $8,800 from the Iowa Arts Council,
which includes funds from the NEA.
By far the largest grant of the season is the $80,904 grant from the Lila
Wallace-Reader's Digest Arts Partners Program, administered by the Association
of Performing Arts Presenters. This grant will support seven weeks of residency
activities by the Colorado String Quartet.
During fall and winter residencies, the quartet will not only perform in
Hancher, but also will participate in activities with Wesley United Methodist
Church in Muscatine, the Unitarian-Universalist Society and Zion Lutheran
Church in Iowa City, the Lisbon Public Library, the Cedar Rapids Public Library
and the Iowa City Public Library. The fall residency will explore the connection
between spirituality and music, and the winter residency will address the
expression of identity in music and literature.
Hancher's programming is also supported by contributions from individuals
