UI College of Dentistry names Dr. Jed Hand executive associate dean
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Dr. Jed Hand, University of Iowa professor and head of
preventive and community dentistry, has been named executive associate dean
of the UI College of Dentistry.
"Dr. Hand is an accomplished educator, researcher and practitioner who
continues his exemplary service to the college and the university in this
new role," says Dr. David Johnsen, dean of the college.
A UI faculty member since 1982, Hand is a graduate of Bowling Green State
University and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He practiced
general dentistry for eight years before returning to the University of Michigan
for a master's degree in health services administration. He completed the
degree in 1980, then served as associate director for the New York State Health
Department Office of Health Services Management before coming to Iowa.
Hand's research interests include the epidemiology of oral conditions among
the elderly, dental care financing, and utilization of dental services. He
has served on dozens of collegiate, university and state committees.
Nationally, Hand has been a member of the Oral Biology and Medicine Study
Section for the National Institutes of Health, and an active member of the
American Public Health Association, the American Association of Public Health
Dentistry, the American Association of Dental Schools, the American Dental
Association (ADA), and other organizations. He currently serves on the Council
on Scientific Affairs for the ADA.
As executive associate dean, Hand will assist in providing collegiate leadership
and implementing policy. He will serve as the college's chief operating officer
in the dean's absence.
