UI College of Dentistry names Dr. Jed Hand executive associate dean

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Dr. Jed Hand, University of Iowa professor and head of preventive and community dentistry, has been named executive associate dean of the UI College of Dentistry.

"Dr. Hand is an accomplished educator, researcher and practitioner who continues his exemplary service to the college and the university in this new role," says Dr. David Johnsen, dean of the college.

A UI faculty member since 1982, Hand is a graduate of Bowling Green State University and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He practiced general dentistry for eight years before returning to the University of Michigan for a master's degree in health services administration. He completed the degree in 1980, then served as associate director for the New York State Health Department Office of Health Services Management before coming to Iowa.

Hand's research interests include the epidemiology of oral conditions among the elderly, dental care financing, and utilization of dental services. He has served on dozens of collegiate, university and state committees.

Nationally, Hand has been a member of the Oral Biology and Medicine Study Section for the National Institutes of Health, and an active member of the American Public Health Association, the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, the American Association of Dental Schools, the American Dental Association (ADA), and other organizations. He currently serves on the Council on Scientific Affairs for the ADA.

As executive associate dean, Hand will assist in providing collegiate leadership and implementing policy. He will serve as the college's chief operating officer in the dean's absence.
