UI Libraries staff member participates in European meeting for librarians
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Carolyn Kohler, head of government publications at the
University of Iowa Libraries, participated in a training seminar for European
Documentation Center librarians at the invitation of the European Commission.
The June meeting was in Brussels, Belgium. Representing the UI Libraries,
which house a depository for European Union (EU) publications, Kohler was
one of 11 American librarians joining some 53 European librarians, documentation
specialists, and European Commission representatives from 25 countries.
During the three-day seminar, 16 officials of the EU gave presentations on
its role in world politics today, acquisition, dissemination, and biological
control of EU information in various formats. Particular emphasis was on current
and future trends in electronic information.
The proceedings were in French or English with simultaneous translation provided.
While the group primarily met in the European Commission's Albert Borschette
Conference Centre, they also visited the Council of Ministers and the European
Parliament. Following the official seminar, the American contingent met separately
for a day of training on European Union databases (Eurobases) and particularly
the Mistral command language in use.
