University of Iowa Libraries celebrate Jell-O
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Libraries celebrates the 100th
anniversary of Jell-O with an exhibition of materials drawn from the Szathmary
Collection of Culinary Arts in the special collections department. The exhibition
is on display through September on the third floor of the Main Library.
From its inauspicious beginning in 1897, through the period when frustrated
founder Pearl B. Wait finally sold the product patent for $450, "America's
most famous dessert" has evolved into a billion dollar brand name. Sales
exceed 400 million boxes annually.
The exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It was prepared
by UI special collections staff Dick Kolbet and Judy Macy with the help of
Susan Hansen and Brandi Baldosier.
