Release: Immediate

New discussion group will focus on "Women's Identity"

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- "Women's Identity: Change and Personal Growth" is a structured discussion group focusing on self-esteem and empowerment of women. The group will meet each week from 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Women's Resource and Action Center, 130 North Madison Street on the campus of the University of Iowa.

Group discussions will be led by Bernardita Llanos, UI visiting professor of Spanish and trained facilitator. The discussions will cover eight topics: making dreams a reality in a diverse and multicultural society; images of women in our society and how they affect us; women as care-givers - our relations with family and friends; intimate relationships and the act of concession; women's feelings and ways of knowing; imagining worlds - reading and writing; empowerment and self-determination; and starting a journey.

"This group will provide a place to share strengths, concerns, and ways to build community," says Monique DiCarlo, director of the Women's Resource and Action Center. "Women need a place to make their dreams their reality, and this group encourages them to do that."
