Release: Immediate

Reporters and photographers are invited to attend a groundbreaking ceremony at 3 p.m., Friday, May 2, 1997 near the corner of Washington and Capitol Streets to mark the beginning of the UI College of Engineering building modernization project.

UI President Mary Sue Coleman and College of Engineering Dean Richard K. Miller will be present to initiate the first major engineering building improvement in more than 30 years.

The $26 million project, scheduled for completion in 2001, will include new classrooms, an auditorium, an outdoor plaza, student commons and atrium and a four-story laboratory combined with the renovation of the existing building.

Rich Wretman, UI Foundation director of development for the College of Engineering, will be on hand to discuss advances in the private gift campaign which is augmenting the project's $14 million in state appropriations and $4 million in university funding.
