University of Iowa Libraries research resident honored

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Toby Lyles, minority research resident librarian at the University of Iowa Libraries, has been named an emerging leader by the American Library Association (ALA).

A member of the Information Research and Instructional Services staff at the libraries, Lyles will attend a special session at the annual ALA conference in San Francisco, Calif. Titled "The Emerging Leaders Institute," the pre-conference will be lead by ALA President Mary Somerville who emphasizes the need to grow future leaders in the library profession.

Some 25 library professionals with five years experience or less were chosen from across the country to participate. They will be trained in the areas of conflict resolution, decision making, coalition building, communication and professional image. ALA leaders will be linked with participants for follow-up and mentoring.

The goal of the program is to train a diverse group to bridge the gap between library school and management responsibilities.
