UI to host Sport, Media and National Identity forum
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Cultural and political themes within the Olympic Games
will be the focus of an international roundtable and public forum Friday,
April 18, at the University of Iowa.
This public session, to be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Iowa Room of the
Iowa Memorial Union, is part of the two-day Sport, Media and National Identity:
a forum on Local and Global Meanings of the Olympic Games. The session will
consist of a panel presentation followed by a public discussion, questions
and responses, and a reception with refreshments from 5 to 5:30 p.m.
Panelists include Christine Grant, UI director of Women's Athletics; Gudmundur
Magnusson of the University of Iceland economics faculty; Zhou He, of the
San Jose State University journalism and mass communications faculty; and
Roger Thurow, Wall Street Journal writer. Moderator will be Stephen G. Wieting,
UI sociology professor.
