1997 RiverFest features Run-DMC as headline musical act

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Rap-masters Run-DMC will headline this year's RiverFest musical line-up, the 1997 RiverFest Executive Council and S.C.O.P.E. Productions recently announced.

Run-DMC will take the stage Friday, April 25, at 9 p.m. in Hubbard Park. Opening act will be the Champaign, Ill.-based Poster Children who will perform at 7 p.m. Local hip-hoppers Genuyne and the Crew will also perform between the Poster Children and Run-DMC.

RiverFest, an annual ritual of fun events held in the Spring at the University of Iowa, is scheduled this year from April 24-27.

Several other notable RiverFest musical events scheduled include the annual "Battle of the Bands" competition, showcasing some of the best local acts. Eight groups are set to begin performing at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26. Band entrants this year include Sweat Lodge, Swizzle Tree, Trance Mission, Greenlight Bus Driver, Destrophy, Bottledog, Pompeii V and Family Groove Company.

Two new music venues have been established to satisfy blues and jazz fans. The West Side Jazz Stage, sponsored in part by the Iowa City Jazz Festival, will be located on the patio of the UI Art Museum Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The same day, the blues stage, located directly north of the Iowa Memorial Union,will host four local acts, Scarlet Runner, The Instigators, Shade of Blue and Bo Ramsey, from noon to 6:30 p.m.

On Thursday, April 24, downtown Iowa City will host the sounds of Stacie Kutzbach and Sara Pace who will open for Stuart Davis. Performances will take place near the fountain in the Pedestrian Mall from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.
