CICS offers summer workshops for Iowa teachers

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Center for International and Comparative Studies (CICS) has announced its annual summer workshops for Iowa teachers.

This year's workshops, which begin in June, are titled "Internetworks in International Studies," "French and Francophone Film" and "China: Looking to the Future." Pre-registration is required, and cost and application deadlines vary. A limited number of scholarships are available for qualified applicants attending certain workshops.

The Internetworks workshop will introduce a wide range of information available on the Internet, teach how to access this information and demonstrate how to place information on the web. The schedule includes lab time, during which participants will participate in guided tours through complexities of the World Wide Web, as well as lecture and discussion time.

The French and Francophone film workshop will focus on how film is used to interpret and understand specific geographical areas, historical eras and concepts. Teachers also will be exposed to the wide range of international film resources available at the UI.

The China workshop will focus on how China may develop over the next several decades, and how that change may affect political stability, the environment and the distribution of power and influence around the world. Workshop participants also will explore U.S.-China relations.

The CICS workshops are funded by a Title VI National Resource Center grant from the U.S. Department of Education, a grant from the Stanley-UI Support Organization and support from the UI Office of the Provost and Continuing Education.

For application information, write to Liz Pearce-Burton, Office of International Education and Services, 120 International Center, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa 52242, or call her at (319)335-0335.
